Ultimately the best measure is speed. Not top speed, but the start from the Christmas tree taking the quarter mile. After all isn’t that the way we measure up vehicles from stop light to stop light. Then I came into a quandary, some of the vehicles posted similar quarter mile times. Then cost comes into play. If I can get the same performance while spending less of my cash, well hell yes! If you want a status symbol don’t look to this article. Sure there are some cars in here that say I am the man, but it’s knowing your vehicle that sets a true car aficionado apart from some dweeb with more money than brains.

Note: all information is from the year 2007 when the article was first published

2. 2007 Saleen S7 Twin Turbo
Top Speed : 223 kph/139 mph
Price : $555,000

Featured in the movie Bruce almighty starring Jim Carrey, this car is custom fit to buyer.

3. 2004 Porsche Carrera GT
Top Speed : 214 kph/133 mph
Price : $440,000

Ok, we know it’s Porsche’. Or should I say over and over again. The Corvette has been in the GM stable since 1953. I’m not holding my breath on that one.

Addendum.

The Ford guys are steaming about my harsh words for Ford not presenting a respectable sport coupe. Not since the Ford GT40 has Ford attempted a sport coupe. What about the new Thunderbird? It’s a respectable car equipped with a supercharged v-8. Sorry, didn’t make the list. Unlike the Corvette and Viper, Ford doesn’t produce a sports car of the same caliber. Ford is capable of doing this, their management just chooses not to. Another car on the list, the Saleen S7, boasts a Ford derived engine. The next question is about the new Mustang, specifically the ROUSH Mustang($41,706). People, when you can buy a plain-jane Vette($41,170) or Viper($73,822) and not have to make any modifications to the car, why would you spend extra money on the Mustang improving the performance. The Mustang is an affordable muscle car. Remember it’s history, it was meant to be an affordable sporty vehicle for the family. It was originally built off the Ford Falcon uni-body frame. The new Mustang is a departure from this. I like the new Mustang but it competes with the likes of the Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Charger. All respectable cars but not supercars.

If you think this is bias, I will bet you that all the Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Nissan folks are upset too. Mercedes took the challenge of building a super car seriously and Porsche has prided itself on being in this market. With time the stats will change as the manufacturers change their line-ups. Every manufacturer should have one mass produced premier vehicle showcasing their dominant designs and ideas. This is costly to the manufacturer and that’s why some choose not to.

All speeds listed in quarter mile times.
All prices are best estimate of the original MSRP.
Due to certain circumstances the prices and availability may vary.

What’s the fastest and most expensive cars on the street.
